SMARTdrill®‘s Variable Depth Control (“VDC”) Technology outperforms human reaction time.

Plunging was studied in a bi-cortical Sawbones model. With conventional surgical drills surgeons plunged past the far cortex an average of 8.4 mm. Plunging with conventional drills is unavoidable, despite fast reaction times – even as low as 120 msec. With the SMARTdrill®, surgeons are able to avoid the previously inevitable plunge. Using SMARTdrill®, surgeons average less than 0.5 mm of plunge.

The SMARTdrill®’s depth control technology will drastically reduce potential injuries related to drill bit plunging. Having more accurate depth control allows surgeons to safely drill without the risk of hitting vital structures such as nerves and arteries. Therefore, surgeons now can have greater confidence than ever before in placing drill holes and placing screws near vital structures. Plunge is no longer a major risk factor.

Ideally, implants are placed where the best bone quality and fixation strength can be obtained, with the least amount of risk to vital structures. Yet, when surgeons fear the plunge because of vital structures in close proximity, the potential to place the screw where it is most accurately needed can be impeded. The instantaneous, variable depth control of SMARTdrill® allows surgeons to drill in any trajectory and place screws accurately without fear of injuring vital structures, making “zone specific drilling” an outdated concept.
